How can a chiropractor help with spinal problems?
The chiropractic approach to better health is to diagnose and help remove interference and restore the natural state of well being. A common condition which interferes with the nervous system is the abnormal movement or positioning of any of the 24 joints of the spine. This spinal problem can cause loss of motion or position and can disrupt the transmission of nerve impulses. With improved spinal function there is often improved nervous system function. Your chiropractor can help remove interferences that may be impairing normal health. What is an adjustment? An adjustment is done by the chiropractor using specific but delicate force in a precise direction. The force is usually applied to a joint that is fixated, "locked up", or not moving properly, in order to restore joint mobility. The adjustment improves mobility of the joint, restores nerve function and decreases pain. How are adjustments done? The purpose of adjustment is to allow the spine to heal with safe and gentle joint manipulation. The adjustment is done with hands or special instruments. Some adjusting methods are quick, whereas others require a slow and constant pressure. Spine adjustment is a precise procedure, generally done by the hand. When properly done, the joint improves its mobility, muscle spasm is relieved and the tension disappears. Are adjustments painful?Adjustments are done gently and not painful. No pain medications are required during the procedure. During the initial manipulation, there may be slight pain or discomfort for a few hours, which subsides as the joint is corrected. Once the adjustment is corrected, the pain starts to gradually fade away in a few weeks to months. With a decrease in pain is an associated increase in mobility and flexibility of the body. Is force required to make spinal corrections? No force is required during spinal corrections. The pressure is gentle and controlled. Joint manipulation can be done with light pressure. Forceful manipulations are generally associated with complications and never done. Adjustments are different in different area of the body and also different in each patient. The manipulation depends on the spinal deformity, the distortion and the degree of pain. What causes the sound of an adjustment?During joint manipulation one may hear "cracking" or "popping" sounds. These sounds are generated when carbon dioxide and other gases are released from your joint fluid during rapid distraction of the joint surfaces. The effect is akin to what one hears when opening a pop bottle. These sounds are not heard all the time, and are not related to any complication. How long does a chiropractic adjustment take? Most adjustments take time. After the initial evaluation, most individuals have to return for a few more visits depending on the degree of spinal deformity. Each session can take 30-45 minutes and a 1-2 visits a week may be required for weeks to months. Can adjustments prevent back surgery? This depends entirely on the degree of spinal problems. In most mild to moderate cases of spinal problems, surgery can be avoided if early chiropractic therapy is initiated. However, in some cases, despite continued adjustments, some individual may remain symptomatic and require evaluation by a surgeon. The major reason for worsening of the joint pan is that individuals fail to seek early chiropractic therapy. Can a person with a back surgery see a chiropractor?Yes, after the incision has healed. The chiropractor is well aware of the surgery and knows exactly how to deal with the pain and limited motion. Generally, one has to wait a few weeks after surgery to start chiropractic therapy. The chiropractic therapy is usually combined with massage, acupressure or physiotherapy for the best results. Is chiropractic care safe?Yes. Chiropractic care is among the safest of the healing arts since it is noninvasive. The art does not involve any drugs or injections. The art of chiropractic therapy is safe, however, rarely; it may be the chiropractor who may not be careful with his manipulations. Is there any age limit for adjustments? There is no age limit, Chiropractic therapy is an all consuming type of treatment which involves a healthy life style living. The result of everyday stress can result in spine degeneration and joint problems, causing body stiffness, pain and fatigue. Chiropractic adjustments can restore joint mobility and the overall health of your spine. These adjustments help to reduce swelling, irritation, pain, and slow degeneration, all conditions often seen in the senior years. |
